Stonyford Gate Install 4/3/04
Here's a few photos of the Gate-install work party. Actually, all
we managed to do was set some posts. But that was the majority of
the project. I'll make a permanent home for these photos, and more,
on the website later.

OK, I guess I'm out of the loop on this entire Stonyford thing.
Where is this gate and property located. The last I heard, we were
not supposed to land anywhere near Stonyford (but we were insuring
several landowners there). If this is not public information, please
email me privately. I would really like to know what going
on.

Hmm, who lands
at Mary's?
Vince, you raise a very good point, one that I don't think we've
completly thought through.
Mary has very graciously invited
the pilots she knows, Sonoma Wings pilots, to land on her property.
In turn, we have added her to the list of "also insureds" so that
she would have some protection. But there are some other factors to
consider: 1. The official, if you can call it that, LZ for St.
Johns, is Fout Springs, since we can not land at the lake. 2.
Most of our flights lately have been XC to the north so that we've
been staying away from the Stonyford area. 3. If we were to say
that Mary's property was OK for anyone to land at, Mary would be
dealing with complete strangers landing near her house, and not
knowing what to do or where to go to get their gliders
out.
And I'm sure there's other factors others will think
of.
Having said all that, my personal feeling is that we
should continue to inform visiting pilots that Fouts is the place to
land if they are not going XC. If a pilot wants to head out to
Stonyford, and they intend to land at Mary's, they should only do so
if they are in the company of a Sonoma Wings pilot that Mary knows.
Above all else, we don't want to do anything to threaten the
relationship, still in its infancy, that we are trying to establish
with Mary, and with the other landowners in the Stonyford
area.
Again, this is only my feeling on this. I'm sure that
the Site Officer and other pilots who have been instrumental in
forging this relationship will have more to add.
As to where
the property is, I'll refer you to this photo, from the map section
of the St. John photo page on our web site: http://www.sonomawings.com/photo/stjohn/map6photo.jpg
If
you look at the left edge of the red, no-land, section, you'll see
two small buildings on the near side of the road into town. To the
left of that is another building, just before the road bends. That
is Mary's house. The gate we put in is about 2/3 of the way between
the house and the two out-buildings. If you look at the lowest point
at the house, you can imagine a fence going from left to right and
touching that point (the dog pen). Leo and Greg landed alongside
that fence, between it and the creek. As far as I know, Mary's
property includes all the un-colored area from the vertical side of
the red over to the left to the vertical side of the yellow, where
it touches a group of trees.

Stonyford
Landings
I think that Sonoma Wings now has two official LZs for Stonyford -
Joe Hester's fields and Mary Quiberg's fields. This is a big area
with a number of easily landable fields.
Both landowners know
us to be responsible, and are very friendly towards us. They are
real folks, and are very sympathetic to our situation. We are very
happy to have them as our friends, and must do our best by
them.
At present Sonoma Wings, by default, "administers" St.
John as a HG site. We cannot control the launch per se, but we do
have some say in where people can land.
As long as pilots
liase with us about flying there I think we can tell them that they
can land at Fouts, the visitor Center fields, and at Joe and Mary's
fields if they are USHGA members. We must make it clear that landing
privileges at Joe and Mary's fields are administered and insured by
Sonoma Wings, and that people may land there with our
permission.
I don't think that either Mary or Joe mind where
we land on their property as long as we show sense and
consideration, which of course we will do, and if numbers are not
excessive, which is not likely.

St. John
LZ's
At present THE OFFICIAL LZ for St. John is the field ajacent to the
para glider LZ across from the Fout's Springs youth facilities.
Anyone planning to land there should go check the field out before
going up the mountain. This LZ is long, faces into the prevailing
winds, and adequate for good H3 landing skills. There are usually
wind streamers up at the PG LZ next to it.
The Visitor Center
fields are the bail out LZ if one gets too low to make the Fout's
LZ.
Unless and until we succeed in overturning the
prohibition on landing at East Park Reservior, Fout's and the
Visitor Center will remain the official LZ and
bailout.
Sonoma Wings has been granted exclusive permission
to land at Joe's and Mary's properties. There are no other LZ's in
Stonyford. These properties may be used by Somoma Wings members and
their guests accompanied by a Sonoma Wings member.
There are
some local residents in Stonyford who view soaring pilots as
"outsiders" which is not hard to understand when one considers why
people move to a remote town like Stonyford. It is very important
that we not screw things up.
There are various other XC
landing options both north and south of Stonyford.
