Sonoma Wings Meeting Minutes

September 27, 2001

President Albert Branson called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. In attendance were Jon James, John Blacet, Matt Jagelka, Scot Huber, Kurt Bainum, Bob Storms, Ernie Camacho, Charley Warren, Larry Roberts, Todd Robinson, Albert Branson, and Greg Sugg.

Brian Padgett, a new advancing hang glider pilot, was introduced to the members. Brian has been taking lessons through Mission Soaring Center.

Old Business:

Hull Fly-In:

The conditions at Hull were quite good. Charley and Jon won the spot landing contests. Kurt had the best bomb drop. Several pilots flew triangles. Kurt said that 40 gliders were set up at the Timberline launch.

Club T-shirt Designs:

The deadline for submission of designs for the 2002 club T-shirts has been extended to the April 2002 meeting.

Christmas Party:

This year’s Christmas party will be at Larry Robert’s house on December 7^th. Directions will be on the bulletin board.

St. John Update:

The U. S. Bureau of Reclamation has sent a letter to the Colusa County Board of Supervisors stating that hang gliding should be exempted from the recent ordinance. The B.O.R. is expecting that Sonoma Wings will apply for a use permit for hang gliding at East Park Reservoir. Jon recommended that the club actively pursue obtaining a use permit. A motion was passed to allow Jon James and Leo Jones to pursue the use permit with the B.O.R. The cost could be quite significant depending on the insurance requirements.

It was noted with some dismay that none of the other use groups such as boaters, motorcyclists, water skiers, campers, horsemen, or fishermen are required to obtain a use permit or provide very expensive insurance even though each of those groups have been involved in numerous safety related accidents and incidents over the years. There have been no safety related incidents involving hang gliders at East Park Reservoir in the twenty years that hang gliders have been landing there.

Charley Warren asked that we have a reading of the duties and responsibilities of each position at the next meeting.
