Hangfly

Notes from 3-25-04 Sonoma Wings meeting

Attending the meeting were, Ernie Camacho, Charley Warren, Kerri Lemos and Aaron Zolnowsky, Donna Matthias, Matt Jagelka, Greg Hackett, Anthony Abate, Michael Globensky and his guests Brian, Kathy, Graham and Nathan (sorry I didn't get their last names), Larry and Diana Roberts, Bill Wood, Brian Padget, Leo Jones, Mehow Krumkos, Greg Sugg, Scot Huber, Jon James, Albert, Allison and Addison Branson, Linda, Kim and Dan Sauer, Ian Ridel and Steve Harvey. That's 31 people, nice turnout.

President Ernie brought the meeting to order at 7:32 PM PST. He started by showing some of the raffle prizes and encouraging people to buy raffle tickets.

First on the agenda was introductions.

Michael Globensky, of Spirits Up brought a small entourage and we went around the room and introduced ourselves to them. Spirits Up is the name of Michael's flight school. He gives trike lessons out of a field by Petaluma. He is launching a venture to start a flight club. He has located a prime piece of property to open a flight operation. He intends to teach people to hang glide under tow behind trikes. The property also has a slope suitable for foot launching, which he will teach also. He plans to start towing pilots in 6 to 8 weeks. Michael says he has taught 3700 people to fly hang gliders via aerotow, without anyone getting a scratch!

The club would cost $500 to join and would give you access to the launch and landing practice hill, glider storage space, hanger access and other LZ amenities including toilets. Pilots would still have to pay for tows but would have easy access to areotowing, very close to home. Might save some money in gas. Might be able to get up from Sonoma Mt. This was a pretty exciting presentation. Check out Michael's web site at spiritsup.com. Thanks Michael.

We talked about events coming up soon in the Stonyford area. The Elk Creek VFD fund-raiser is 3-28. Some members are going. The club agreed to donate $100, which will be bid on bake sale items.

The BAPA fly-in is 3-27, 28, 29.

We will be putting in a gate on April 3rd, in Stonyford. Also on the 3rd we will have club representatives at a campground groundbreaking sponsored by Tread Lightly and the Hummer Helps Foundation. Please sign up to help with these events on the bulletinboard

The treasurer reports that we have 45 members so far paid for 2004. Get your dues to Matt if you haven't yet.

The Cinco de Mayo fly-in will be on 5-8-04. There will be Park Rangers on site. They were upset with us last year for not adhering to our permit. There will be a max of 20 pilots flying and 3 vehicles on the mountain. Everyone on the mountain is responsible for knowing the Park Rules, which include No Dogs, No Smoking, and No unauthorized vehicles.

Everyone is still welcome to come to the BBQ but we will draw for the 20 flyers. Pilots must be on time when the vehicles go up the mountain. They will not be allowed to drive up late themselves. It is the Parks position that 3 vehicles means that's all that comes up, not one goes down and a new third vehicle comes up. There will also be flying on Sunday. Historically we don't push the limits of our permit on the Sunday.

Greg Sugg raised the question of whether the club should address the use of powered harnesses at sensitive club sites. It was agreed to have an executive committee meeting at Ernie's house to discuss the topic. The USHGA insurance no longer covers powered harnesses.

Finally we got to the raffle. We raised $104 for the coffers. Michael Globensky won a wind meter. Jon James and Brian Padgett each won a bottle of Justin's wine. Larry Roberts won a book, Gregg Hackett a "Sky Out" shirt and Leo a Cloudsuck book. Nathan won a Sonoma Wings shirt. Gregg Hackett also won a Sonoma Wings cap and another shirt. (Gregg proves every month that it pays to buy a lot of tickets) Charley won a bag of homegrown lemons and Dan Sauer a book.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15.

The next meeting will be 4-22-04 at Round Table Pizza.
