Mt. Diablo

Site Description

Sonoma Wings pilots have only started flying Diablo recently, although it has been a favorite spring XC site for Bay Area pilots for years. Many XC flights over 100 miles (Keven Dutt: 157) have been made from here to the southeast.
As we put in more time at Diablo, we'll get more photos. Do you have any photos you'd like to contribute?

SE Launch - Set Up area.
Launch is off the right edge of the photo. Camera is facing East. The top of the 'hill' in the background is the South Peak / Observation building.

The North Launch.
Robert Moore is waiting for the wind to pick up a bit, while Scot Huber and Greg Sugg look on.
There is another take-off slot facing NE - the direction the camera is facing - to Scot's right-rear.

Over the top of Diablo.
The SE launch is the cleared area to the left-rear of the glider in the parking lot.
The W launch is at the rear of the parking lot, near the left-most communications tower. It faces WNW, the direction the camera is pointed.
The N launch is just off the right edge of the photo, next to the tall communications tower.

Looking SE from over the top.
The South Peak / Observation building is at the bottom of the photo. The North Peak is at the left edge of the photo.
If you're heading XC, you'll want to follow Robert Moore and Terry Gerson to the SE, out towards Byron in the valley, then head south as far as you can go.

Over the trailerpark, looking NW, back at the peak.
The trailer park is the first bailout LZ on the course line out to the valley. It's on Marsh Creek Rd.
You don't want to land in the field right next to the trailer park (right side of photo) 'cause there's a power line running down the middle of it, parallel to the road.   Land in the large field alongside the road, in the middle of the photo.

Juniper Launch. Large photo shows more to left & right.
In large photo, the camera is facing W at the left edge & N at the right edge. You take off West, toward the left, from above and behind where Robert and Greg are standing. Once you get up you can work Juniper ridge, behind launch, then get up to the main peak, way off the right of the photo. LZ's are the 1000 ft., at the near end of the next, smaller ridge to the left, and others to the W and NW.
This is the main launch for PG, and for everyone when the peak is socked in.

Abreast of Eagle Peak, looking North.
Mitchell Rock is the last bump in the ridge before it dives down to Mitchell Canyon Rd., under my left wheel. The LZ is along the right side of the road.

Mitchel Canyon LZ.
You can see the parking lot at the end of Mitchell Canyon Rd. Final approach is usually over the parking lot and into the field between the road and the creek. The hang glider shape against the green grass next to the quarry is Scot, losing altitude in preparation for landing.
