"Go For It " competition rules
____________________________________________________________
All flights must take place in the USA.
Entrants must be members of Sonoma Wings.
Details of flights must be entered within one month, (30 days) of the flight.
Pilots may enter as many XC flights as they wish.
Their longest 10 flights will be counted.
Details of flights with a $5 initial entry fee.
The latest competition results will be updated on the first of every month,
and published in the newsletter and on the club webpage.
The closing date for the competition will be November 30th.
At least 2 (of 10) flights must be defined (goal, out & return, triangle) flights.
___________________________________________________________
There is a multiplier for glider type.
hang glider/rigid = miles flown x 1
paraglider = miles flown x 2
First apply multiplier above to miles flown along the task line,
then then apply appropriate multiplier below
for goal, o&r, triangle.
Types of Flight
a. Open Distance Flights
All Open Distance flights must be over 10 miles
measured in a straight line between take-off and landing.
Sled rides to the LZ do not count.
b. Goal Flights
These flights score x 1.25
All Goal flights must be from any declared starting point to a
declared finishing point. Goal must be declared before takeoff.
You do not have to land at the goal.
The minimum total distance is 15 miles
measured in a straight line.
c. Out and Return flights
These flights score x 2
All Out and Return flights must be from any declared starting point
(not necessarily declared beforehand) to anywhere, and back to the
declared starting point. The minimum total distance (i.e. out distance
plus return distance) is 15 miles measured in a straight lines and back.
d. Triangle flights
These flights score x 3
All Triangle flights must be from any declared starting point via
two other turning points (not necessarily declared beforehand)
and back to declared starting point. The minimum total distance
(i.e. sum of all three legs) is 15 miles measured in straight lines
between each turning point. The 28% rule must apply (i.e. the shortest leg
must be at least 28% of the total distance of all three legs).
e. Failed Defined XC's
Basically, as with most competitions, failure is
rarely rewarded. However to encourage pilots to attempt defined XCs
and to score competition flights with turnpoints,
we will apply the following rules:
a. If a task is declared, as in competition, before any competitor
starts the task, then you can count your miles along the task line
as far as you flew if you don't complete the task.
This rule allows dogleg flights, if declared in advance.
b. For those tasks where turnpoints can be declared after the task is
started - out & returns and triangles:
i.Failed Out and Returns will score open distance to the turn point.
ii.Failed Triangles will score only competed legs.
iii.For the two legs to score the final incomplete triangle
must comply with the 28% rule.
iv.The final distance scored must be over the Open Distance minimum.
f.Aerotowed flights - Flights beginning with an aerotow launch will
require a declaration of the release height and the co-ordinates of the
release point. A release height of 3,000ft AGL is the maximum that can be
used as the start of an eligible flight.
------------------------------------------------------------
Witnesses are not required for verification of flights - we will use the
honor system, but pilots are urged to take note of where they land and be
as accurate as possible when assesssing co-ordinates. Photos are not
required for verification of startpoints, turnpoints and finish points for
out and returns and triangles, but pilots are encouraged to take them or
use a GPS if possible - think of it as good practice! Turnpoints are
deemed to have been achieved when a photo (real or imaginary) is taken from
the 90 degree quadrant on the far side of the turnpoint from where you are
approaching, or when your GPS tells you that you are there!
9-12-98
2-defined-flight rule added for 2000
Reduced goal from 1.5, change from km to miles for 2001.
4 -6-01 inc tow release height to 3000 AGL
2-18-02 declared flights get total miles flown instead of completed legs only, pg=2x miles
