"Go For It " competition rules
____________________________________________________________
We have decided to try to rejuvenate the Sonoma Wings" Go For It" competition for 2010, with a new format and new rules.
• Flights must originate within the USA. Pilots must be members of Sonoma Wings. Competition closes on November 1st.
• No open distance. Goal flights, Out and Returns, Triangles, and Declared flights only.
Failed attempts, which include at least one turn point, will count as distance flown.
• A declared flight is a Goal, Out and Return or Triangle that was declared before takeoff
and where such declaration was recorded and witnessed. All Goal flights must be declared before launch.
• A pilot may enter any number of flights, but only the top 5 flights will count.
• Flights must be entered within 28 days of the completion of the flight.
• The Honor system will be used for turnpoints, but GPS waypoints may be needed.
• The $10 entry fee will get you a nice glass mug.
Categories of Flights.
a) Goal Flights
1. From any pre-declared start point to any pre-declared finish with up to two pre-declared intermediate turn points. (maximum of 4 waypoints in total.)
2. A completed Goal Flight will score 1.25 times the distance flown. You do not have to land at goal.
3. An incomplete Goal Flight with one turn point or more will score Open Distance, provided that the first turn point is reached.
* (this rule, in effect, encourages the setting of two goals, a turn point and final goal, with the incentives of
being able to claim open miles if you declare and make, the first turn point, AND it encourages pilots
to go somewhere and come back, even if it's not an out and return flight. As long as it's over 10 miles it's good. )
b) Out and Return Flights
1. From any start point and back, with at least one turn point, or optionally two turn points. (i.e. a triangle that does not conform to FAI’s 28% Rule).
You do not have to land at your start point. You do not need to declare start or turn points before launch.
2. A completed Out and Return will score 2.0 times the distance flown.
3. An incomplete Out and Return will score Open Distance, provided that a first turn point is reached.
4. A declared Out and Return will score 2.5 time the distance flown.
*(this rule gives pilot incentive to do XC flights with multiple turnpoints.
It gives the pilot an option to try this at any point in their flight, on a course of their own choosing)
c) Triangle flights
1. From any start point via two, or three, turn points and back to the start point.
You do not have to land at your start point. You do not need to declare start or turn points before launch.
2. For a flight to be recorded as a Triangle it must be complete and satisfy the FAI’s 28% Rule,
(shortest side must be greater than, or equal to, 28% of the distance flown).
3. A completed Triangle that satisfies 28% rule will score 2.5 times the distance flown.
4. A completed Triangle that does NOT satisfy 28% rule will score as Out and Return (see above).
5. An incomplete Triangle will score Open Distance, provided that a first turn point is reached. (see above)
6. A declared Triangle will score 3.0 times the distance flown.
d) Declared Flights
A declared flight is a Goal, Out and Return or Triangle that was declared before takeoff
and where such declaration was witnessed. All Goal Flights must be declared before takeoff.
Minimum Flight Distances
• Goal – 10 miles
• Out and Return – 10 miles
• Triangle – 15 miles
(Trying to get paragliders to enter this too!)
Tow Launched Flights
A flight which began with a tow launch will only be accepted if the pilot released from the tow at a height of 2500ft AGL or less.
Handicaps
The "Go For It" competition will be open to Paragliders, Flex wings, and Rigid Wings.
Paragliders will score x 2 points.
Flex wings will score x 1.25 points.
Rigid Wings will score x 1 points.
